The house was dark—and empty. “Perhaps he’s in his room sulking. I’ll go take a look.” Liam frowned as they went into the sitting room. Concern clouded Katie’s eyes and he wondered if she felt as uneasy as he. Striding to the back of the house, he rapped on Grant’s door. Silence. The boy had taken to playing his pop music loudly lately, and Liam had a feeling that if he was in his room the stereo would now be blaring.

He pushed the door open and switched on the light. The bed was untouched, the room empty. “He’s not here,” he said when he re-joined the others.

Bart’s hair took some punishment as he raked his fingers through it.

“Perhaps he’s gone off with the other youngsters who were there.” Bart looked about as if not knowing what to do next. Liam felt sorry for him. His brother had about as much idea of how to handle a teenage boy as he did—and that knowledge was nil. The boy was in such a distressed state earlier it was likely he’d taken off to lick the wounds of his hurt pride. Damn! Why hadn’t he handled him with more finesse?

“I’ll go take a look around the garden,” he said, inwardly knowing Grant wouldn’t be found out there.

“Good idea. I suggest we all look inside,” Katie said, and Viola and Bart nodded agreeably, content to let someone else make suggestions that they seemed incapable of making. Lord only knew how things would pan out if Bart did get together with Viola, Grant was almost as jealous of that budding relationship as he was of Liam and his obvious desire for Katie. Liam tried to think back to his own teenage years and couldn’t recall feeling such strong emotions.

Liam searched every corner of the garden and house surrounds with no luck. If Grant was anywhere out there he’d decided to stay hidden. Going inside, he found the others sitting about looking uneasy.

“He’ll be back soon,” he said, with a confidence he didn’t feel. “Who’s for coffee?” Beckoning to Katie he went to the kitchen. She chewed on a thumb pad as she trailed him.

“I hope he hasn’t done anything stupid,” she said, filling the electric jug and switching it on.

“No, he’s far too sensible.” Liam knew that was a downright lie. The boy was infatuated and infatuated teenagers could do all sorts of irrational things. “He’s probably trying to make us pay. He’ll come home when he’s had a chance to cool off.”

But an hour later, after they’d each downed two cups of coffee, he still hadn’t returned.

“What’s a reasonable period of time we should let lapse before we call the police?” Bart asked sombrely, voicing what had gone through Liam’s mind for the past hour.

“I should think it would be best to wait another hour at least. I mean, he could have gone off with the other kids who were there tonight.” Liam remembered the louts on the beach earlier and cringed. Drunk and full of youthful exuberance, it was hard to imagine what pranks they would get up to.
